1. Hey, a Quick Intro

This Privacy Policy explains how SortScreen handles information when you use the app. I built SortScreen because I wanted to make managing screenshots less annoying — a small tool that helps you stay organized in a fun, easy way.

I don't run any servers that store your data. Everything the app does — detecting screenshots, organizing files, scheduling deletions, showing the overlay, managing categories — happens entirely on your device.

The only third-party services involved (each with their own data practices) are:

  • Google AdMob (ads in the free tier)
  • Google Firebase Crashlytics (crash reporting so I can fix bugs)
  • Google Play Billing (if you choose to go Premium)

All of these are governed by Google's privacy policies .

By installing and using SortScreen, you acknowledge the practices described here.

2. Who Am I

SortScreen is developed by OddStuff.

3. Information the App Accesses

3.1 Your Screenshots and Images

SortScreen requests access to your device's image gallery (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES on Android 13+; READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE on older versions; READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED for partial-access on Android 14+).

The app uses this access to:

  • Display your screenshots in an organized gallery grid
  • Show screenshot thumbnails in the capture overlay
  • Let you sort, organize, move, and clean your screenshots

Your images stay on your device. I don't upload them, analyze them on any cloud, or send them anywhere. All image decoding and thumbnail rendering happen locally on your phone.

3.2 File Paths and Metadata

SortScreen reads file paths, filenames, and basic file metadata (creation timestamp, dimensions) to populate the screenshot gallery and manage categories. This metadata is stored in a local SQLite database (shotsort.sqlite) on your device and is not transmitted to any server.

3.3 Category Storage (On-Device SQLite)

The app keeps a local SQLite database (shotsort.sqlite) that stores:

  • File paths and MediaStore identifiers of screenshots you've interacted with
  • Category assignments and positions (so your muscle memory stays intact)
  • Category names and colors you've created

All of this stays on your device.

3.4 Your Preferences and Settings

Your preferences (theme, sort settings, detection toggle, delete mode, auto-delete duration, feedback settings) are stored in:

  • Android SharedPreferences on your device
  • A local JSON file (clean_prefs.json) for clean-mode preferences
  • A local text file (premium_status.txt) for your local Premium status cache

All stored locally in the app's private data sandbox.

3.5 Pending Delete Queue

When you schedule a timed deletion ("Delete later"), it gets written to a local JSON file (pending_deletes.json) on your device. This lets background sweeps clean up screenshots on schedule. This file never leaves your device.

3.6 What I Don't Collect

I don't operate backend servers and I don't collect:

  • Your name, email address, or any account info
  • Your screenshot image contents
  • Your location
  • Your contacts or phone data
  • Device hardware identifiers (IMEI, serial number)

4. Android Permissions Explained

4.1 Required Permissions

PermissionWhy It's Needed
READ_MEDIA_IMAGESRead screenshot files from the device gallery for display, categorization, and automatic detection.
FOREGROUND_SERVICE + FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USERun the local screenshot detection service in the background to catch new screenshots and process scheduled deletions.
POST_NOTIFICATIONSShow the low-priority system notification indicating the background detection service is active (required by Android 13+).

4.2 Special / Optional Permissions

PermissionWhat It DoesIf You Don't Grant It
SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW ("Display over other apps")Shows the floating swipe-to-sort overlay when you take a screenshot. The overlay won't appear, but gallery and manual sorting still work fine.
MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE ("All files access")Enables instant deletion without repetitive system confirmation dialogs, and allows background timed deletions.App falls back to standard MediaStore scoped-storage confirmation dialogs on each delete.
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONSHelps prevent aggressive OEM battery management from killing the background detection service. Background detection may stop on certain OEM-customized devices after screen lock.

4.3 Accessibility Service (Optional)

SortScreen includes an optional Accessibility Service (ShotSortAccessibilityService) that you can activate in Android Accessibility Settings.

  • Purpose: Monitors window state changes to detect OEM screenshot preview windows and show the SortScreen overlay at the right time.
  • Privacy: It does NOT read screen content, text, or keystrokes.
  • Banking Protection: Automatically pauses when recognized financial or banking apps are in the foreground.
  • Control: Disabled by default — it's entirely optional.

4.4 Other Permissions

PermissionPurpose
VIBRATEHaptic feedback for swipe interactions. No data involved.
INTERNETRequired by Google AdMob (free tier) and Firebase Crashlytics to handle ad requests and crash reports.
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATEChecks connectivity before loading ads or sending crash logs.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETEDReschedules pending auto-delete alarms after device reboot.
AD_IDAdvertising ID permission used by Google AdMob when consent is granted.

5. Third-Party Services

5.1 Google AdMob (Free Tier Only)

The free version of SortScreen shows ads served by Google AdMob. When ads load, Google may collect:

  • Device and Account Identifiers: Google Advertising ID (GAID) and App Set ID for ad delivery and fraud detection.
  • App Interactions: Ad impressions, clicks, and rewarded ad completion events.
  • Approximate Location: Derived from IP address for regional ad relevance (no precise GPS data).
  • Diagnostics: Ad loading latency and technical performance metrics.

Consent: SortScreen integrates Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) SDK. Users in the EEA/UK will see a consent dialog. You can manage or reset ad preferences via Android Settings → Google → Ads.

Premium: Upgrading to Premium removes all ads and stops AdMob initialization entirely.

5.2 Google Firebase Crashlytics (Crash Reporting)

SortScreen uses Firebase Crashlytics (Google LLC) to help me spot and fix crashes.

When a crash or uncaught exception occurs, Crashlytics may collect:

  • Crash stack traces and error messages
  • Device technical specs (device model, Android OS version, free RAM/disk)
  • App version and build state

What Crashlytics does NOT get from this app:

  • No screenshot images or image data
  • No personal identifiers, emails, or contacts
  • No sensitive file paths or category names

Crash data is used solely to improve app stability. For more details, see Google's Privacy Policy .

5.3 Google Play Billing (Optional Premium Purchase)

Optional in-app purchases (monthly subscription or lifetime purchase) are handled entirely by Google Play. I never see or receive your payment card info or billing details.

6. Data Storage and Security

All app data and preferences are stored in Android's private app sandbox:

  • shotsort.sqlite: Local SQLite database
  • shotsort_prefs: Local SharedPreferences
  • pending_deletes.json: Local app file

Data is protected by Android's application isolation. When you uninstall SortScreen, Android automatically deletes all local app data.

7. Data Retention

  • Screenshot files: Your actual screenshots stay in your device gallery — they're yours.
  • Local app database: Stays on your device until you clear app storage or uninstall.
  • Crash logs: Crashlytics retains technical crash logs on Google's servers according to Firebase's standard retention policies.

8. Children's Privacy

SortScreen is rated 18+ and is not intended for children under 13. The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Your Rights

All your screenshot files and categorization data live entirely on your device. You can view, modify, or delete them anytime in the app or via Android Settings → Apps → SortScreen → Storage → Clear Data.

10. Changes to This Policy

If I make meaningful changes to this policy, I'll update it here and adjust the "Last Updated" date. I may also mention it in an app update. Your continued use of SortScreen after changes means you're okay with the updated policy.
