Quick Help

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Photo Permission Issues

SortScreen needs access to your photo library to detect, display, and organize your screenshots.

Android 13 and above: The system will ask for "Photos and videos" access (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES). Go ahead and grant it.

Android 12 and below: The system will ask for "Storage" access (READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE). Grant that one.

If you previously denied the permission:

  1. Open Android Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ Permissions
  2. Tap Photos and videos (or Storage)
  3. Select Allow or Allow all the time

If the permission shows "Denied" with no option to re-grant, tap Open app settings from SortScreen's Settings screen.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Android 14 Partial Photo Access

Android 14 introduced a "Select photos" option that gives apps access only to specific photos rather than your full library. SortScreen needs Full access to work as an automated organizer because:

  • "Select photos" only allows reading photos you've already selected โ€” newly captured screenshots can't be detected automatically.
  • The gallery view can't discover and file new screenshots until you manually select them.

To switch to full access:

  1. Open Android Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ Permissions โ†’ Photos and videos
  2. Select Allow all

โœจ Overlay Permission (Display Over Other Apps)

The floating overlay (the swipe-to-sort panel that pops up after you take a screenshot) needs "Display over other apps" permission (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW).

To enable:

  1. In SortScreen โ†’ Settings โ†’ Permissions โ†’ Screenshot detection, tap Enable
  2. Android will open Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ Special app access โ†’ Display over other apps โ†’ SortScreen
  3. Toggle the switch to ON
  4. Head back to SortScreen

๐Ÿ” Screenshot Detection Not Working

SortScreen uses a foreground service to detect new screenshots. If the overlay isn't showing up, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check permissions

In SortScreen โ†’ Settings โ†’ Permissions, confirm:

  • Photo access: Granted
  • Notifications: Granted
  • Screenshot detection (Overlay): Enabled

Step 2: Check the toggle

In SortScreen Settings, make sure the Detect screenshots toggle is ON.

Step 3: Check battery optimizations

Aggressive OEM battery managers love to freeze background apps. See Battery Restrictions below.

Step 4: Optional Accessibility Service

For better detection speed on Samsung (One UI) or Oppo/OnePlus/Realme (ColorOS), try enabling the SortScreen Accessibility Service in: Android Settings โ†’ Accessibility โ†’ Downloaded apps โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ ON.

๐Ÿ”” Notification Permission

Android 13+ requires explicit notification permission for foreground services. SortScreen shows a silent, low-priority ongoing notification while actively monitoring for screenshots. This keeps the detection service alive โ€” it's an Android system requirement.

๐Ÿ“ All Files Access (Broader File Access)

"All files access" (MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) is the primary path for the smoothest experience:

โ€ข Instant deletion: Deletes screenshots right away without forcing an Android system confirmation dialog on every single swipe or batch action.

โ€ข Background timed deletion: Lets the scheduled "Delete Later" sweep clean up expired screenshots from the background where no interactive prompt can be shown.

Without this permission (fallback path):

โ€ข On Android 11+, deleting a screenshot triggers a system confirmation dialog for each deletion.

โ€ข Background timed deletion can't prompt interactively without an active screen.

To enable:

  1. In SortScreen โ†’ Settings โ†’ Permissions โ†’ Broader file access โ†’ Grant
  2. In Android system settings, toggle Allow access to all files to ON

Battery Restrictions and Background Killing

To keep screenshot detection running reliably:

  1. In SortScreen Settings, tap Background & auto-start
  2. Set SortScreen to Unrestricted or No restrictions

Common OEM Settings:

Xiaomi / MIUI / HyperOS

Security โ†’ Autostart โ†’ enable SortScreen. Battery โ†’ App battery saver โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ No restrictions.

Samsung One UI

Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ Battery โ†’ Unrestricted.

Oppo / OnePlus / Realme

Settings โ†’ Battery โ†’ Battery optimization โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ Don't optimize.

Vivo / iQOO

iManager โ†’ App management โ†’ Auto launch โ†’ SortScreen โ†’ ON.

โฑ๏ธ Timed Deletion Not Firing

Timed deletions ("Delete later") are saved to disk and scheduled via Android's AlarmManager (setAndAllowWhileIdle).

  • They should fire even when the app is closed or after a device reboot.
  • If delayed by Android Doze mode, the sweep will try to clean all overdue items when the device wakes up or on the next app launch.
  • If deletions aren't firing, check that SortScreen hasn't been force-stopped and has battery optimization set to Unrestricted.
